Carl Hansen & Søn

In 1908 the Danish cabinetmaker Carl Hansen opened a small furniture workshop on Funen. The company's successful development has since built on two core values: uncompromising passion for quality craftsmanship and collaboration with outstanding designers who constantly innovate and refine modern design.

Carl Hansen & Søn's development has been strongly influenced by a long-standing relationship with one of the greatest designers ever: Hans J. Wegner. The creative collaboration began in 1949, when Carl Hansen's son, Holger Hansen, chose to invite the then unknown designer to a collaboration. Wegner said yes and created a famous series of chairs, including the iconic Y-chair.

The collaboration on this project and the many that followed shows what it is possible to achieve when unmatched design and uncompromising production go hand in hand. Wegner was in the 1950s one of the main forces behind the design movement Danish Modern's international success. He has over time become Carl Hansen & Søn's best-known and best-selling designer with works that are recognized as modern classics and treasured collectibles worldwide - and his legacy remains a significant part of the company's DNA.

Carl Hansen & Søn is still working closely with Hans J. Wegner's Drawing Office and is the world's largest manufacturer of furniture designed by Wegner at the same time Carl Hansen & Søn is also manufacturer of furniture designed by Ole Wanscher, Arne Jacobsen, Frits Henningsen, Kaare Klint, Mogens Koch, Poul Kjærholm and also modern designers among them Thomas Bo Kastholm, Naja Utzon Popov, Anker Bak and others.
